Hisahito is a second-year student at the University of Tsukuba's College of Biological Sciences and reportedly went to the banquet after classes ended for the day. Officials, including the grand master of the Crown Prince's Household, said he was able to attend because the engagement did not conflict with his coursework.

Family ties and past headlines

The Imperial Household Agency pointed out that his sisters also attended similar functions while at university. Hisahito is the only son of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Akishino and remains second in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne. His sister Mako left the imperial family upon marrying Kei Komuro in 2021, declined the customary government payment and later moved abroad, where the couple welcomed a child in May 2025.
